There is an interesting history to the Cambodia gambling halls that sit just over the dividing line from neighboring Thailand, in which casino wagering is not permitted. Eight casinos are situated in a generally tiny space in the metropolis of Poipet in Cambodia. This conclave of Cambodia casinos is in a perfect location, a 3 to four hour trip from Bangkok and Macao, the two largest gaming centers in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a huge business with Thai laborers and tourists from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a couple of Westerners. The phenomenal income accrued from the gambling dens ranges from 7.5 million dollars to more than twelve and a half million dollars, and there are a number of limitations requirements for gambling hall ownership. Ownership is presumed to be largely Thai; although, financial sources are cryptic. The borders are formally open from 0900 to 5:00 p.m., and although visas are apparently necessary to cross, there are methods around this, as is accurate of most border crossings.
The initial Cambodia casinos premiered in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were required to close in 1998, leaving just one gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a docked ship gambling den, features 150 slot machine games and 60 table games. The Naga river boat never closes with forty two tables of mini-punto banco, four tables of vingt-et-un, 10 of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The original gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in 1999 and the Golden Crown quickly opened. There are 150 slot machines and five tables at the Golden Crown and 104 one armed bandits and sixty eight tables at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains three hundred one armed bandits and seventy gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slot machines and ninety six gaming tables, including 87 baccarat (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Additionally, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slots and sixty six of the common tables, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the eight casinos in Poipet, also a part of a hotel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slot machines and 97 games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an international resort and hotel complex that contains many amenities accompanying the casino, which has 10,000 square feet of one hundred and thirty slots and eighty eight tables.
